Quail Springs Fire burns on Nevada test range near Area 51
The Quail Springs Fire has burned across restricted Nevada Test and Training Range land near Area 51. The official account identifies a lightning-caused wildfire, not a fire at Groom Lake itself.
The Quail Springs Fire is burning on restricted land in the Nevada Test and Training Range, near the place most people know as Area 51.
The BLM identifies it as a lightning-caused wildfire in the wider military range, not a fire at Groom Lake itself.
What the BLM says
In its July 27 incident update, the Bureau of Land Management placed the fire in Lincoln County on Nevada Test and Training Range withdrawn land and nearby BLM land. The agency said the fire was first reported on July 24, gave the cause as natural lightning, and listed pinyon-juniper and grass as the fuels.
At 6 p.m. on July 26, the BLM put the fire at about 4,450 acres with zero containment. It described active uphill runs, hot and dry conditions, and an indirect suppression strategy. The responding agencies named in the update were the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Wildland Fire Service. FOX5 Las Vegas independently reported that early growth, citing the incident's extreme fire behaviour and its rapid expansion near Bald Mountain.
The BLM estimate is roughly 18 square kilometres.
Dreamland Resort's latest field update
In a later field video from outside the restricted area, Dreamland Resort reported 12,990 acres and 7% containment, and showed smoke and aerial firefighting near Bald Mountain. That would put the fire at about 53 square kilometres. The BLM page cited above still gives the July 26 estimate of 4,450 acres and zero containment.
A second fire farther inside the range
Quail Springs was not the only reported fire in the wider restricted complex. In a separate local update, Dreamland Resort identified another fire in the southern part of Range 74A, near the boundary with Area 12 of the Nevada National Security Site.
The BLM updates name and quantify Quail Springs, but do not name or size that second fire.
Not at Groom Lake
The fire is inside a vast restricted range. That is not the same thing as a fire at the Groom Lake facility. The BLM said no publicly accessible structures, residences, or public spaces were threatened, although smoke could affect Nevada State Route 375.
The range remains closed to the public regardless of the fire.
